Your Challenge:

As a Welding Engineer you will have the opportunity to tackle new projects and develop highly engineered solutions to meet our Navy customers’ needs and transform their businesses.

You will be responsible for utilizing required welding techniques and procedures for all welding applications and/or qualifications. Updates weld record preparation and weld procedure and welder qualification records. Interacts/participates at administrative and/or production meetings to support engineering/ manufacturing and program management. Requires hands-on experience as a welding application engineer in a manufacturing environment where shielded metal arc (SMAW, stick), gas metal arc welding (GMAW, MIG), gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW, TIG or heliarc), flux core arc welding (FCAW), hard facing (PTA), x-ray quality structure and seal welding; as well as LASER and electron beam welding. Strength in engineering metallurgy of material properties, material specifications, pre and post heat-treatment requirements. Knowledge of critical weld joints and hard surfacing deposits.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide innovative, technically significant, and economically important material and welding solutions in support of Marketing, Design and Manufacturing.

  • Works with the technical requirements and welding activities to comply with both Military Welding Standard NAVSEA Technical Publication S9074-AQ-GIB-010/248 and Boiler Pressure Vessel Code ASME Section IX.

  • Develop and manage materials joining work plans including schedules, budgets, and resource requirements to meet project objectives.

  • Identify, evaluate, and resolve non-routine materials joining and manufacturing engineering problems as they relate to nontraditional repair work in an accurate, timely and informed manner.

  • Proactively seek and accept responsibility for solving new and difficult materials joining and manufacturing engineering challenges, while appropriately assessing and managing risks.

  • Effectively communicate technical concepts across all levels internally and customer organizations.

  • Provide technical support, priorities and direction to a skilled labor force and manufacturing support personnel in support of materials, joining, testing and evaluation.

  • Identify new and/or improved welding processes/techniques for improving applications.

  • Work with design and manufacturing engineering to resolve materials joining issues before and during manufacturing and provide technical support to suppliers and customers.

  • Provide support in identifying and troubleshooting equipment problems.

  • Provide support for audits of suppliers.

  • Interact with customers and design engineers to ensure compliance with customer specifications.

Your Expertise:

  • B.S. Degree in Welding Engineering, Metallurgical, or Materials Science from an accredited institution with a minimum of five years of related experience is preferred. Equivalent experience may be considered.

  • Weld symbol and fabrication drawing reading skills.

  • Good communication and presentation skills (written and verbal).

  • Proven ability to meet deadlines and multi-task on multiple projects.

  • Be an innovative thinker and present theories/concepts in a professional manner.

  • Knowledge of the following welding codes

  • MIL-STD 248/278

  • ASME Section III & IX

  • AWS D1.1, D1.2 & D1.6

  • NAVSEA 250-1500-1

  • RCC-M

  • Experience in working with carbon, low, high alloy and stainless steels, nickel and copper-based alloys, as well as dissimilar metal welding.

  • Prior experience as a welding, materials, or manufacturing engineer.

Preferred Experience/credentials

  • Hands-on welding experience in a fabrication or manufacturing environment or Defense Navy environment

  • Active participation with AWS

  • Certified Welding Inspector

  • Must be a sole US citizen and able to obtain and maintain DOD security clearance

Relocation and Travel:

This position will be located in Summerville, South Carolina, but will require travel to suppliers periodically.

If required, relocation assistance will be offered to compensate some moving expenses to Summerville SC.
